Basic
(Ecological Concerns)
Living
in great ignorance, we forget the simplicity of life. Air, water, food and
shelter are the basics of material existence.
When
I bought my shelter in Uniontown, Ohio, part of the attractiveness of the
deal was an independent water system. That is what I had when my dream
started.
Uncontrolled
materialism is destroying our lives. We all need things for survival.
Matter or things should never control the spirit. When the quest for
things occupies our beings, our respect of one another diminishes. The
ideal of materialism is to promote the general welfare by limiting our
desires and sharing the wealth so all have and are safe and content.
In
the process of uncontrolled materialism, desire extends way beyond need
and greed disconnects the spirit from loving and sharing and being
responsible to others. Prolonged human happiness cannot be found in this
state.
Charlie
Kittinger and the Uniontown landfill:
In
the late sixties and the early seventies I was an independent fencing
contractor. (Through this work I experienced being in the middle of
barriers.) I would go to the Industrial Excess Landfill in Uniontown to
see the owner about a fence at the landfill. (His daughter had been in my
class in high school.) Through the fence job I started winter work for the
Kittinger operation. This relationship would tie me to the Kittingers as a
friend and it gave me a first hand view of the lack of concern by industry
to deal with its waste. Our nation is presently the most wasteful,
gluttonous civilization in the history of the world. Through the years,
while employed by the Kittingers, I would end up in the bowels of
industry; I experienced first hand their irresponsible disposition towards
the by-product of their product creation.
In
1980 we had accumulated a mass of barrels with industrial waste on a
property owned by the Kittinger operation. It was Goodyear's mess, yet they
refused to act responsibly to help us process the mess. It was the
intervention of the EPA that finally got Goodyear to begrudgingly deal
with this situation.
Knowing
what I was doing, I wrote the chairman of the board of Goodyear an
extensive disciplinary commentary as to their lack of responsibility for
their by-product and the mismanagement of their corporation. Exhibit A
(Letter to Charles Pilliod): A response by a surrogate was sent to try to
pacify my attitude but only confirmed my disposition. In exhibits B,
C,
and D I documented all responses through Jimmy Carter.
Today
a creation of uncontrolled concern for future growth and safety, the
Uniontown landfill exists. I had just found out after all these years that
Charles Kittinger only bought a used up sand and gravel pit to haul in fly
ash (a non-toxic by-product of coal burning). It was the government that
initiated the Industrial Excess Landfill. The landfill was not Charlie’s
original intent. Charlie did not want involved but it became a monster
that devoured his life.
A
letter from the trustees to assure me the landfill is safe came in the
mail recently --Exhibit E: . I came to realize that trustee Sue Ruley, who
issued the first zoning permit on the landfill, is the same Sue Ruley that
assures the citizens of the area that there is no danger in the present
state of the landfill. The same Sue Ruley that watches the building of new
homes just south east of the landfill. The landfill is on a gravel run. I
know when I hauled industrial waste we were allowed to put stuff where I
did not think it was wise, but I was just the dumb barrel hauler. (Do or
don’t work.)
I
know my friend worked for Hyman Budoff. Hyman is a highly materialistic
man, intent on always proving his cleverness over others. Hyman would
become Charlie's partner and finally drove Charlie out of the operation. My
friend, John, worked and drove for Hyman when he owned the landfill. John
said 85% to 90% of his loads went to the Akron landfill, but questionable
loads were brought to Uniontown and were immediately buried. I know,
without a doubt, by common sense that a landfill on a gravel run will
always seep and pollute. Gravity and water movement insures this to be
true. This landfill was ill conceived and should be moved but corruption
and greed obstruct wisdom.
The
reason I laid dormant on the landfill issue for years was I had already
found that people would rather cry and moan and beg the corruption that
exists rather than face the real issue. People should not have to beg for
justice. I should not have used my life to fight injustice, I truly
don’t like arguing or fighting but this deceptive world leaves me no
choice.
I
found from my struggles that most people cower to injustice as they had in
the Project 91 issue. I know the landfill circumstance would fall to the
same blight if I raised issue at the wrong time.
What
activated me to challenge at this time? An article would appear in the
Akron Beacon Journal about a man claiming that stainless steel
capsules had been buried in the Uniontown landfill containing radioactive
waste. The man was none other than former owner and my friend Charlie
Kittinger. (Exhibit F) I knew Charlie was standing alone and needed some
backing.. I had people say they would stand with me but they didn’t. I
also recognized the citizen group fighting the landfill cover-up would at
least bolster Charlie’s position till I can help exonerate him. Years
ago if I tried to unite Charlie with them they would not have understood
his position, but today it is to both parties advantage to unite and that
is what I did for them. People I have talked to could not see why he would
lie about the capsules.
In
a letter to the public Sue Ruley would assure the township that the
landfill was not an eminent threat to their safety and well being. Other
then her and Charlie’s name was an ivory tower judges name. What the
agencies of government would conclude would be tainted by the fact that
the government originated the problem. (Exhibit
E)
The
real issue is whether Sue or Charlie is telling the truth. No high cost or
special reports were necessary if only they would have had Charlie take a
backhoe and dig up the capsules if his memory is correct. (Three, four, or
five hours work at the most.) Is everyone afraid for Charlie’s safety?
They sure weren’t when we worked with everyone’s waste from our
so-called advanced technological society years ago.
When
I went to see Charlie when the newspaper came out he was not home so I
talked first to his wife. They first got trapped in the landfill deal. No
one wanted to look for better ways. Charlie always had new ideas about
dealing with the waste but no one wanted to pay. Everyone looked for the
cheap; easy ways out and in the end they persecuted Charlie. Years of
courts and time and money and finally it had come to an end. She told her
husband why do you want to mention eggs at this time? Charlie told her if
he is a Christian, he has no other choice. Driven by awareness and
conscience he spoke up.
I
have no doubt on Charlie’s word. So many lies by industry and government
and in the end they try to blame it all on the individual or weakest leak.
Pollutants dumped in places no one is aware of. We are trying to kill
ourselves and our future with our incessant appetite for things.
Russ
Lutton, the person in charge of the Goodyear barrel operation at that
time, once said, “we don’t know what to do with this stuff, let alone
to deal with nuclear waste.” This makes the Uniontown situation unique
in that we are talking industrial and atomic waste located in a densely
populated area with a movable base. Not good. Animals are smart not to
excrete waste where they lay.
My
water supply is in jeopardy. Toxic pollutants are right around the corner
from my home. I worked it. I saw it. I know it. My life, liberty,
happiness, property, and health are in jeopardy. This is not the state of
America our constitution envisions.
Government
and industry created the mess in my area. Why would a court of the
corruption do what is right by the people of Uniontown? Why would Sue
Ruley admit to her mistakes? It is easier to close their minds
I
have to live here. I want my rights upheld. I have known for some time
that the landfill is wrong, but it just was not my time to raise issue. I
have been living a precarious life style because of my beliefs I was
unable to pay for the water system in front of my house at the time it was
installed. Since I was living poor the cost was abated to my taxes. This
will now run over twenty thousand dollars. Still I am not hooked to the
system. My society had continually thrown me backwards because of my
beliefs.
Faith
has allowed me to work my way out of debt, but I still feel the general
population owes me a water system out of the general funds. It was poor
government planning which allowed uncontrolled industrial greed to blind
themselves from the responsibility of their actions. A bandage approach
does not cure a problem of this nature. I say the landfill was ill
conceived. Too many suspicious loads were hauled into a volatile
situation. For the love of life and posterity it is imperative that we
realign ourselves with our reality. We have taken Gods natural garden, the
only place we have to dwell and allowed ourselves to disregard the
privilege of living on Gods green earth. We say God bless America and so
He should but this is not the America that God can bless. It is our
ungodly standards, which left unchecked, will lead to our destruction. Out
leader now is a man of matter. He favors industry and profit above
accountability for how that profit is made. This is not a good
circumstance. Uncontrolled industry has proven time and again they will
taint their values for profit.
We
need to draw a line at Uniontown. The destruction we fear from others is
minimal compared to how we are destroying ourselves.
The
April 10, 2002 update on this issue would be that John Manos “judge”
who exhibited he is a liar and enemy of the truth would demand Chris
Borello turn over her evidence to the courts. She has been a dedicated
leader of the protest against the Uniontown cover-up from the beginning.
This would be giving the enemy your evidence. That’s how corruption uses
the abuse of power to protect their lies. They get your position and twist
it to fit their needs.
This
demonstrates the truth has them on the run.
